One source of the rapid social change and chaos in our country ( and I think more in the US than some other places because we have the IDEA and IDEAL that we are governed by laws and not the whimsy of kings or cabals) is the advancement of gaming, pornography, and movies to a state where anything is possible...in a cyber reality. Beginning with sex chat phone lines and role playing games, advancing as the technologies increased to pornography available of any fantasy you wanted, games where in 3D splendor you could be any character you wanted, and movies that made aliens animals and anything else seem real. As in, as real as any other movie character, which we have proven, with our ability to call up favorite movie scenes, stalkers of actors, sometimes deadly, and language that comes from movies....we accept at a deep level what we see on the "silver screen." the small screen as well, as TV productions have also kept up with technology and social tends.
The privacy of online sex and gaming is only 20 years old. but anyone under 35 has been raised in a way different from those who are older....the exciting world of computers having opened up whole new vistas...where as I (at 58) might love quick social contact with friends and the ability to track down information in a heartbeat, younger people have been saturated with a level of self interest and "reality" numbing that is simply not understandable to us old uns. Are we less narcissistic? less prone to the addictions of pornography or living out our social lives in cyber space? no. But we had more time to absorb having to live in reality than this generation did. For goodness sake, even our news broadcasts are slanted towards entertainment, and often the reporters are in front of a green screen, not actually reporting physically from the location they are reporting on! There is nothing to actually verify. The news as well comes at dizzying speed, leaving the days' story in the dust in the quest for something that will hold the audiences' attention. And we don't tend to send naked pictures on our phones, or constantly send out weirdly posed photos of ourselves..(to look more sexually appealing and available ,,,and yet many of them claim to be in relationship...so the sex ON button is just a trademark of their generation...) You can choose a character in a game, try any kind of sex you like, bending gender and even species at will, You can use the cellphone to make a sexual tryst and hide your online and phone activity quite easily. And now to the main event. If you liked Avatar, at some level you feel left out...alone..crippled. But just like that character, why not jump into a new body and have the life of your dreams? But my friends, transformation in real life, in the physical world, is messy, painful and often unsuccessful. So why not throw out reality rules and live by cyber rules? Anything goes and the only sin is making someone else feel bad. Absorbing the very pagan ideals of movies and games and finding any sort of moral instruction both boring and limiting, the swell of sentiment is to throw the baby out with the bathwater...and ignore the consequences of what those moral voices tried to teach..that a hedonistic life has very real dangers, not just to your body but to your soul, is ignored in favor of finding your own truth, And if your truth harms other people, who cares as long as you don;t get caught. |
