Most commentators think Job is “just a moral story,”
I disagree And I think what he knew and what he believed, mattered. Pdf, Notes on the Book of Job by Louis Rushmore “Job” appears in Genesis 46:13 as a descendent of Issachar, but who is called “Jashub” in similar references in Numbers 26:24 and 1 Chronicles 7:1; the occurrence of “Job” in Genesis 46:13 is not a reference to the star character of the Book of Job. Translations other than the KJV or NKJV do not use the name “Job” in Genesis. 46:13. “Job” appears two more times in the Old Testament outside of the Book of Job. Both of those instances are in Ezekiel 14:14, 20. Genesis 46:13 13The sons of Issachar: Tola and Puvvah and Iob and Shimron. So; from the time of Jacob, Job was a name known among the tribe of Issachar. Ezekiel 14:14 …13"Son of man, if a country sins against Me by committing unfaithfulness, and I stretch out My hand against it, destroy its supply of bread, send famine against it and cut off from it both man and beast, 14even though these three men, Noah, Daniel and Job were in its midst, by their own righteousness they could only deliver themselves," declares the Lord GOD. 15"If I were to cause wild beasts to pass through the land and they depopulated it, and it became desolate so that no one would pass through it because of the beasts,… Ezekiel 14:20 …19"Or if I should send a plague against that country and pour out My wrath in blood on it to cut off man and beast from it, 20even though Noah, Daniel and Job were in its midst, as I live," declares the Lord GOD,"they could not deliver either their son or their daughter. They would deliver only themselves by their righteousness. Individual righteousness does not save beyond self. That’s a tough nut Jesus died for all of mankind. God is telling you why righteousness is only a singular one person deal. And why the Redeemer was needed. Why was Job righteous? Was it any of their own doing? Or, like Noah and Daniel and Abraham….because he believed? Job 19:25 …24"That with an iron stylus and lead They were engraved in the rock forever! 25"As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth. 26"Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God;… Job knew that a Redeemer was coming, and that he would see him in the flesh. Physical resurrection. Job 38:4 …3"Now gird up your loins like a man, And I will ask you, and you instruct Me! 4"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding, 5Who set its measurements? Since you know. Or who stretched the line on it?… Job actually said he did not question God's right to chasten,(God did not: Satan did, God does not lead us into temptation) but wanted to die if he had to be in such a state without knowing why. God takes this further. We are not the Creator, He is. Even Satan is a created being, not Creator. God’s ways are not our ways. Things are hidden from us because we are NOT God. As an added bonus, he didn’t just hear God, he saw Him! Job 45:5 I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee. God said chastising a man for unrighteousness without knowing all the facts was wrong. How often do we blast those in pain; well, what did you do??? Instead of comforting them. These were learned men, they also asserted God is the authority over all. But that Man was hopeless;unable to achieve righteousness. Therefore, Job could not be righteous. Job 42:7 And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath. 42:8 Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job. 42:9 So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job. 42:10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. 42:11 Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. 42:12 So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. 42:13 He had also seven sons and three daughters. 42:14 And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Keren-happuch. 42:15 And in all the land were no women found sofair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. 42:16 After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations. 42:17 So Job died, being old and full of days. God confirmed Job’s righteousness. He could indeed offer sin offerings for others. That’s pretty impressive. When were these things? 1. Sabeans, a tall people from the time of 1200 BC to AD 275 possibly Yemen 2. Knew Scripture, sacrificed for others as well as himself, by belief was considered righteous. This places it after the time of Moses 3. The name Job was known as a Jewish name, a Job, son of Issachar, went into Egypt. Uz was the border of Jordan and Israel. He was probably Jewish but was not traveling to worship in Israel. David ruled about 1000 BC. Joseph in Egypt app 1800 BC,( 2000 to 1600 BC) add 430 years and 40 years for entry into Canaan..app. 1300 BC (1500 to 1100) I think as his was a well known story, this happened between 1200-1000 BC. When there was no King. 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes. Can you say, like Job Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him That is belief, through prosperity and poverty, illness and health. Not on what God does for you, but because HE IS WORTHY. HE IS GOD. HE IS RIGHTEOUS. |
