Many people were appalled by the image of Kali shown on the side of a building in New York City, red and black and tongue lolling out.She is a fearsome goddess but not the only one in the US. We have had goddess worship happening almost since the beginning of our country..I wonder how many of us knew that we were actually looking at goddesses and not just iconic symbols?
I have no problem with symbols that are timeless.I understand it was a common convention in times past to evoke Greek and Roman gods and goddesses as ideals. But today, in pagan America (it can no longer be called Judeo-Christian) I believe they all take on their full meaning. After all, God is a drag. Why not try a goddess. Blind Justice with her scales weighing our fates is actually Iustitia, Justitia or Lady Justice (Latin: Iustitia, the Roman goddess of Justice, who is equivalent to the Greek goddesses Themis) . You might never look at our justice system the same way. Controlled by a goddess who wants justice, not mercy. And for those who like the wilder side of life, what about lady Luck? Lady Luck is actually Fortuna.Whenever you gamble, be it at the tables in Vegas, the lottery , or Wall Street, you are paying court to this goddess And she is so very fickle.Devotees keep right on worshiping her, though. the Lady in the Harbor, the statue of Liberty, is actually Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.Our immigrants have always sought liberty. Interesting that we no longer follow law in allowing new citizens. We evoke her, but we do not defend her. The first goddess we have records of is Gaia.Mother earth/birth and death. Our climate change advocates show every sign of worshiping her above and beyond all things. No one is allowed to disagree with any of her devotees. And now, New York, with its spirit of inclusiveness, shows Kali in all her deadly glory. She is a mother goddess too..but also a destroyer. We destroy lives, destroy babies, destroy cultures. She certainly fits the current era. |
